A Northwest Snapshot
As you leave the hustle and bustle of cosmopolitan VANCOUVER and cross the Port Mann Bridge, the pastoral Fraser Valley opens up before you. You see a mixture of cityscapes and cows or graceful horses on green meadows.
MOUNT BAKER, a dormant snowcapped volcano looms as an invincible colossus visible from afar. It dominates the vista of the entire region and on a clear day can be admired for many miles. Its icy peak sometimes reflects the sunshine with brilliant colours or it may totally disappear in a bank of clouds. For those “adventurous souls” wishing to ascend MOUNT BAKER, a short trip across the border into WASHINGTON STATE can easily bring you to the lower reaches of the glacier in the comfort of your car. In the winter this becomes a skier’s paradise. On a crisp winter’s day steam is visibly venting through the ice cap, a reminder of volcanic activity deep in the belly of the giant.
Around the City of Abbotsford a mixture of “Berry or Dairy Farms” dot the landscape. These scenes are soothing to the spirit of the traveller probably on the way to Abbotsford, Mission, Chilliwack or one of the other local communities. Or it might be somebody on their journey to the Interior of British Columbia, Alberta and beyond.
Just a short distance east of Chilliwack one may want to take in MINTER GARDENS, famous for its beautiful floral arrangements or visit HARRISON HOT SPRINGS.
Further east the Fraser Valley narrows with majestic mountain scenery all around before the highways divide around HOPE and snake off in easterly or northerly directions. Having squeezed through the mountains the mighty FRASER RIVER opens up into a wider delta near HOPE on its westbound journey to the PACIFIC until it arrives in the GREATER VANCOUVER area, carving out several channels that embrace the city.
